The Colorado River is the 18th longest river in the US (1,387 km) and
the longest river with both its source (in the Llano Estacado near
Lubbock) and mouth (near Matagorda in the Gulf of Mexico) within Texas.
The river basin runs through a southeast strip of Texas crossing the
Hill Country and covering 103,341 km2 . The river is an important source
of water for farming, cities, and electrical power production. There are
11 major reservoirs along the Colorado River including the Highland
Lakes northwest of Austin.
